Levels of Care in Maine: Which Rehab Program Fits?
Maine's October 2026 SAMHSA listings show 112 outpatient locations, compared with 16 residential or hospital inpatient locations and 3 PHP locations. An assessment using ASAM criteria can help match the level of support to a person’s health and safety needs.
Drug Detox in Maine
Maine has 15 SAMHSA-listed locations offering withdrawal management in the October 2026 review. Detox helps manage physical withdrawal and can be particularly important when alcohol or certain sedatives are involved. The safest setting depends on symptoms, medical history and clinician assessment. Some people need 24-hour medical monitoring; others may be managed with outpatient support. Withdrawal services are a starting point, not a full recovery plan. Ask whether the location offers medical supervision, medications when appropriate and help moving into ongoing care. MaineCare is listed as accepted at 114 locations statewide, but you must confirm coverage for a specific detox service and provider. Learn what to expect from medically supervised detox programs. If someone is severely confused, having a seizure or in danger, seek emergency care.
Residential and Inpatient Rehab in Maine
Maine has 16 locations listing residential or hospital inpatient treatment in the October 2026 SAMHSA directory review. Within the listings, 14 indicate non-hospital residential services and 4 indicate hospital inpatient services; some locations appear in both categories. This type of care can fit people who need a structured setting, regular support or distance from triggers at home. Length of stay varies by clinical needs and program rather than following one fixed schedule. Hospital inpatient services may be appropriate when more intensive medical or psychiatric care is needed. Ask about staffing, medications, mental health treatment and the transition home before choosing residential treatment. Our inpatient drug rehab guide explains how hospital and residential settings can differ. Because these Maine options are limited compared with outpatient care, discuss referral timing and alternatives with the provider.
Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) in Maine
Three Maine locations list partial hospitalization or day treatment in the October 2026 SAMHSA review. A PHP typically provides structured treatment for much of the day while allowing the person to sleep outside the facility. It may suit someone who needs intensive support without round-the-clock residential care. PHP schedules, therapy services and medication access differ by provider. Ask whether a Maine program offers psychiatric assessment, treatment for co-occurring conditions and a plan for stepping down to less intensive care. MaineCare appears among the payment types at 114 locations overall; that does not mean every PHP takes your plan or provides every covered service. Because only three locations list PHP, it can help to ask about availability and nearby intensive outpatient alternatives. Review the partial hospitalization program guide before calling.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in Maine
Maine has 29 SAMHSA-listed intensive outpatient locations in the October 2026 review. An IOP often involves several treatment sessions each week while the person continues living at home. It can be a step down after residential care or an initial option when regular outpatient visits would not be enough. The actual weekly schedule, group sessions, counseling and medication services depend on the Maine provider. Ask whether appointments are available outside work or school hours and whether telehealth is possible. Across Maine listings, 109 locations report telehealth, although those may offer different services. A clinician can help decide whether IOP is safe when someone needs withdrawal support or faces a serious psychiatric crisis. Read about intensive outpatient programs and confirm MaineCare or private-plan participation directly.
Outpatient Rehab in Maine
Outpatient rehab is the most common setting in Maine's SAMHSA directory: 112 of 121 distinct locations list it in our October 2026 review. Services may include individual counseling, group support, medication management and recovery planning while the person lives at home. Appointment frequency can range from periodic visits to more intensive treatment, depending on the program and needs. This setting may work for someone who can remain safe between visits and has a reliable way to attend. Maine's 109 telehealth listings may expand access in areas where travel is difficult, but confirm that the specific service can be delivered remotely. Because the statewide list includes 114 MaineCare-accepting locations, patients can ask about their MaineCare benefits as well as other coverage. Use the outpatient drug rehab guide to prepare questions for a first call.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Maine
Maine has 85 listed locations reporting treatment for both substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions, according to the October 2026 SAMHSA review. Dual diagnosis care considers both concerns together rather than asking a person to address one problem first. It may be helpful when substance use is connected with depression, anxiety, trauma or another mental health condition. Ask each Maine program whether it provides an integrated assessment, psychiatric care and medication management or instead refers patients elsewhere. Availability and staffing can differ even when a listing checks the same service category. A person with urgent thoughts of self-harm should call or text 988 for crisis support. Learn about dual diagnosis treatment and discuss the appropriate level of care with a qualified professional.
Medication-Based Treatment in Maine
Medication can be an important part of care for opioid or alcohol use disorder in Maine. In the October 2026 SAMHSA listings, 84 locations report buprenorphine, 70 naltrexone and 12 methadone services through opioid treatment programs. Another 58 list on-site prescribing of medications for alcohol use disorder. These are overlapping service categories, not separate facility totals. Medication choices depend on a clinical evaluation, personal goals, drug interactions and ongoing follow-up. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed through certified opioid treatment programs, and patients should confirm each Maine site's eligibility and intake process. MaineCare covers medications for opioid use disorder, but pharmacy and provider rules still matter. See the guide to medication-assisted treatment and the overview of medications for alcohol use disorder.
The table compares Maine service counts and common treatment settings; each location may appear in more than one row.
| Level of care | Maine facilities | Best for | Typical intensity | Learn more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Detox | 15 | Withdrawal needs | Medical monitoring as needed | Detox guide |
| Residential/inpatient | 16 | Structured on-site care | Full-time stay | Residential guide |

| Medication services | 84 buprenorphine; 70 naltrexone; 12 methadone OTPs | Medication-supported care | Varies by medication and setting | Medication guide |
If you are unsure which setting fits, compare inpatient and outpatient rehab before asking for an assessment.

Private insurance and rehab in Maine
Our review found 101 Maine locations listing private insurance. The federal mental health and substance use parity law generally limits unfair differences between covered behavioral-health benefits and comparable medical or surgical benefits. It does not mean every provider is in network or every service is covered. Ask your insurer and the Maine program for written details on deductibles, authorizations and expected out-of-pocket charges.
Medicare coverage for Maine treatment
Ninety-one Maine listings report accepting Medicare in the October 2026 SAMHSA directory review. Medicare coverage depends on the service, medical necessity, provider participation and your coverage arrangement. Ask whether the treatment location bills Original Medicare or your Medicare Advantage plan, and confirm any patient costs before enrollment.

The directory review identified 73 locations listing state-financed insurance options and 44 listing a sliding-fee scale. These numbers do not establish that a particular service is free. Areas of Maine With Fewer Treatment Options
In our October 2026 SAMHSA directory review, 13 of Maine's 16 counties had at least one listed location. No locations were listed in Somerset, Piscataquis or Sagadahoc counties; that is a directory finding, not proof that no services exist there. Call nearby programs to ask about telehealth, medication visits and local referrals.
Somerset County and the Skowhegan area
Somerset had no location in the reviewed SAMHSA directory. Waterville, Augusta and Bangor are cities with listed services where residents can ask about intake or referral options. Travel conditions may affect trips, particularly in winter, so discuss remote follow-up when appropriate.
Piscataquis County and the Dover-Foxcroft area
Piscataquis had no listed location in the October 2026 review. Bangor, Brewer and Millinocket are nearby service cities to ask about treatment availability. Maine's county OPTIONS liaisons can also help connect people with services and naloxone.

Northern and Downeast Maine
Aroostook County had 10 listings, including services in Houlton, Presque Isle and Caribou; Washington County had 7, including Calais and Machias. Ask local providers how often visits are required and whether follow-up can be arranged closer to home.
